What is United Way of Greater Hartsville?
We are a local branch of the global, community-based, non-profit United Way Worldwide. Our office is located in Hartsville, SC, in Darlington County.
Our Mission:
To assist those who are facing difficult times or situations and are putting in the work to get themselves on track, but could use a helping hand to get back on their feet. We run more than ten (10) direct impact programs from our office, in addition to supporting several community partners who provide food, housing, safety, and medical resources to our neighbors.
Who We Serve:
We serve all of Darlington County. This includes all parts of Hartsville, Darlington, Society Hill, Dovesville, Clyde, Lamar, Oates, and Lydia that fall within our county boundaries. The zip codes we serve include all portions of 29550, 29593, 29540, 29532, 29079, and 29069, which fall within Darlington County boundaries.
History:
United Way of Greater Hartsville started in October 1959 as United Fund of Hartsville. United Fund of Hartsville, under the direction of Joe L. Wiggins, received its very first endorsement, from Sonoco, in the form of a $6,000 donation from the company, as well as the kick-off of the first-ever employee campaign. The annual goal for that first year was $44,000.
Originally United Fund of Hartsville, which later became United Way of Hartsville was serving only the city of Hartsville. We expanded our reach in June 2023, when the Darlington United Way closed its doors.
